When wedding vendors team up amazing, creative things tend to happen. In November wedding planner Shannon Valente teamed up with Sofia Katherine Photography and Amborella Floral Studio to put on a DIY Wedding Workshop to show you how to plan a wedding on a budget and today we are sharing the photos from their wonderful event!
From Shannon: I’m a big DIYer, there is something so satisfying about completing a project you made completely from scratch. I also work with a lot of DIY brides and what better way to caterer to those brides than by hosting a DIY wedding workshop!
But first we needed a theme….
Our colour palette was navy blue and wine mixed with rich gold accents, which oozed royalty. So we started thinking about royal couples and how to plan a royal wedding, but without the hefty price tag. What if Will and Kate were broke…..I mean, REALLY broke. Planning began for the royal wedding of the year, on a budget!
On the menu: flower arranging, DIY crafting and a ton of money saving advice. Many elements of our decor was from Wedding Chicks, if you haven’t checked them out, do so immediately. They offer loads of cute DIY tutorials and free printables.
Warning: there was a LOT of glitter used in the making of this workshop. I printed menus on kraft paper, glittered champagne bottles in lieu of table numbers, glittered a deck of cards for name cards at each place setting and Whippt Desserts provided the most delicious blue, gold and ivory macaron wedding favours. Great Events Rentals provided the linens, napkins and charger plates, the navy and gold really popped on the wood tables.
All the wedding stationery was also printed at home on kraft paper using free printables from Wedding Chicks.
The seating chart was an old gold frame and I painted a piece of cardboard blue to match our decor, used playing cards (and yes MORE glitter!) and wrote the names and table “numbers” in white using a chalk paint pen. For the guestbook we had a ‘message in a bottle’ with rolled scrolls. As this was a workshop it also doubled as our comment card box.
Misha from Amborella did an amazing job instructing everyone on how to arrange a beautiful floral centrepiece. She also gave some tips on what to DIY and what NOT to DIY when it comes to wedding flowers.
Next it was my turn to give some DIY tips. I covered everything from wedding stationery to decor and everything in between. I also broke down how much I spent on each item for the “wedding”. I went EXTREME budget to show you how inexpensively things can actually be done.

As part of my portion we also did a DIY craft and made ‘Mr’ and ‘Mrs’ glitter chair signs.
Sofia of Sofia Katherine Photography, wrapped things up with a chat about photography and some great generals tips for both the photos as well as scheduling your wedding day. Then our guests got to have some fun in the Photo Booth with the royal wedding inspired photo booth props, some I found on etsy and a few free ones on oh happy day, I also made a ripped fabric backdrop to match our decor.
Bottom line, there were rave reviews on the comment cards, we had a ton of fun and can’t wait for the next one. A huge thank you to The Lake House for the use of their beautiful space.
