We chatted with Melissa and Jared from Melissa Rae Photography about their love of photography, weddings and how they capture such incredibly jaw-dropping images!
First off, how did you two begin working together? Tell us about how you got into photography, specifically wedding photography?
My love for photography began when we started our family! I was inspired taking photos of our kids which turned into a small business specializing in families and newborns. In 2009, I was asked to photograph a wedding, brought Jared along to assist and the rest is history! We both fell in love with it and began booking more weddings. In 2011 we began exclusively photographing weddings and engagements.
What do you like most about doing wedding photography?
We love the relationships developed, the interaction, and friendships. We also love the fast paced nature of weddings, the unexpected, and how no two weddings are the same!
What do you think sets you apart from other photographers?
We believe what sets us apart from other photographers is how we utilize our creative lighting and incorporate it into daytime and nighttime images. It allows us to create unique opportunities & images for our clients! We also believe in great customer service from the moment our clients inquire until well after their wedding day. We created an on-line resource guide where our couples can go to find inspiration, vendors that we have worked with, timelines, and tips to help them have a stress-free wedding!
You talk about getting to know the story, personality and style of the couple you are shooting. Do you have a favorite story or experience that you’ve been able to capture in your photography?
A favorite story/experience of ours was from one of our 2014 couples! They love nature, exploring and wanted images that reflected that! We captured their engagement session in Vancouver and their elopement at Peyto Lake. On their wedding day hair and make-up was longer then expected and with no cell service at peyto the jp was no longer there. We took our clients to a beautiful lookout point where there was no one else and had them share their vows. Jared then said some special words while they exchanged rings. It was the most intimate, emotional ceremony we have witnessed. We then spent the rest of the day exploring some of their favorite locations and capturing their love! (the next day they were able to finalize the paper work!) It was an amazing experience and definitely unexpected!
You talk about aiming for the ‘wow factor’ images in your shots. How do you achieve such jaw-dropping images?
We love incorporating the surroundings into our clients photographs. We do this by location scouting with our family to find unique places! We also love to incorporate creative lighting which allows us to shoot at night and achieve dramatic images! We carry along a lot of gear to make sure we are ready to achieve a “wow” factor image no matter what the circumstance. Always being prepared (and having adventurous clients!!) has allowed for us to capture these images.
How has your 2015 been so far? Do you still have openings?
2015 has been amazing so far! We are working with incredible couples and have made some great connections in the wedding industry as well! We still have some availability for fall and winter weddings and are now accepting bookings for 2016!
