Natalie believes that Photography is a method of storytelling and she constantly challenges herself to capture the true emotions of your day in the most creative and unique way possible. We spoke to her about why she got into the wedding industry, her photographic style and her exciting Weddingbells most inspiring photographers of 2013 award!
CBA: The quote on the main page of your website gives away the fact that you’re a hopeless romantic, but we would love to know a little more about you. Why did you decide to get into the wedding industry and why do you love it so much?
H&S: I’ve loved the act of documentation my whole life – throughout my youth I was an avid journal and story writer, always taking in and verbalizing on paper the world I saw around me. Finding a new medium in photography to do exactly what I love – storytell – has been exhilarating and, quite honestly, life changing. For me, weddings are a day filled with beauty and magic that emerges effortlessly. I believe my job is to capture that magic in the most authentic way – unobtrusively, honestly, joyfully.
“I focus on a journalistic style of photography, where I am able to highlight real moments, genuine smiles, and the raw emotion of the day.”
CBA: We would describe your style as completely refreshing! It’s clean, bright, beautiful and very romantic – How do you differentiate yourself from other photographers?
H&S: I have a passion for capturing moments, telling stories, and creating art with my camera. Most importantly, I care about people and helping them express who they are. Each person has a unique story to tell and nothing inspires me more than helping my clients celebrate that uniqueness with a photograph. It’s hard to narrow down exactly what my shooting style is or how I interact, and even if I could it would depend completely on whom I am photographing. Overall, I focus on a journalistic style of photography, where I am able to highlight real moments, genuine smiles, and the raw emotion of the day.
“My creativity is inspired by the stories that unfold in front of me, observing the different ways my couples show each other love.”
CBA: We also saw that you were one of Canadian Wedding Magazine, Weddingbells 25 Most inspiring Photographers of 2013. What an amazing compliment that must have been! How do you keep your photography new and fresh?
H&S: The relationships I build with my couples mean more to me than any accolade or award I’ve received. My creativity is inspired by the stories that unfold in front of me, observing the different ways my couples show each other love. I try to challenge myself to capture those moments in the most authentic, creative and original way possible.
